Quality wine grapes are the key to producing quality wines. Here at Solitude, we have found that the cool climate of the Carneros growing region, produces some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir available in the world today. Today's grape growers are knowledgeable, well financed, and have all the staff and state-of-the-art equipment required to produce high quality fruit. This allows small producers, like Solitude, tremendous opportunities that were unavailable ten years ago.
Solitude purchases most of our grapes from the Sangiacomo family, which has been farming in the Carneros since 1927. It is a large vineyard that offers several possibilities to the winemaker. The exceptional sugar to acid balance, and outstanding flavor characteristics are what we seek in both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We have a long term contract with the Sangiacomo family which secures this essential grape source for the future.
In the 1970's, great strides were made in California winemaking, unfortunately, this came with a price. Many wines were overprocessed, bland, and frankly, boring. At Solitude, we combine traditional Burgundian techniques with California cellar practices to produce our ultra premium varietals. The result is a wine with quality, value, and consistency.
Solitude Chardonnay is barrel fermented in French oak, utilizing Burgundian yeast strains. Malo-lactic fermentation, yeast contact, and stirring occur during the seven months of oak aging. Our Pinot Noir is whole cluster fermented in small tanks, two tons at a time, so it can be punched down by hand. Minimal handling during this ten months of aging in primarily new, French oak barrels, completes the wine. Enjoy!
